Matthew 3. 1 Ἐν δὲ
Matthew 3. 1 And in
those
days
there comes along
John
the baptist
preaching
in the desert
of Judea
2 saying:
Repent,
for the kingdom of
the heavens has come near.
3 This is he
spoken of through
Isaiah
the prophet
saying:
A voice of
one shouting
in the desert:
Make ready
the road of the Lord;
make his
paths straight.
4 But John
himself
had his clothing
from
hairs of a camel
and a
skin belt
around his loin,
but his food was
locusts
and wild honey.
5 Then
there travelled
to him
Jerusalem
and all Judea
and all
the region
of the Jordan,
6 and they
were baptized
in the Jordan river
by him,
confessing
their sins.

Matthew 3.7-12.
1-6 Jerome, Against the Pelagians 3.2,
concerning the gospel according to the Hebrews:
(In the gospel according to the Hebrews, which indeed is written
in Chaldean and Syrian speech, but with Hebraic letters, which the Nazoraeans use until this
day, according to the apostles, or as most term it according to Matthew, which is also
held in the Caesarean library, it narrates the story: Behold, the mother of the Lord
and his brothers were saying to him: John the baptist is baptizing for the remission of
sins. Let us also be baptized by him. But he said to them: How have I sinned, that I should
go and be baptized by him? Unless perchance this that I have just said is
ignorance.)
Mark 1. 2 Καθὼς
καὶ
5 καὶ
Mark 1. 2 Just as
it has been written in
Isaiah
the prophet:
Behold,
I send
my messenger
before your face,
who will prepare
your road,
3 A voice of
one shouting
in the desert:
Make ready
the road of the Lord;
make his
paths straight.
4 There came
John,
the one baptizing
in the desert
and
preaching a baptism
of repentance
for the forgiveness
of sins.
5 And
there travelled
to him
all of the country
of Judea
and all the
Jerusalemites
and they
were baptized
by him
in the Jordan river,
confessing
their sins.
6 And John
was
clothed
with
hairs of a camel
and a
skin belt
around his loin,
and was eating
locusts
and wild honey.

(For, as John was situated at the Jordan and preaching

be the Christ. He himself also shouted to them: I am not the Christ, but a voice
shouting.)

Luke 3. 1 And in
the fifteenth year
of the leadership
of Tiberius Caesar,
while Pontius Pilate
was leading Judea,
and Herod was
tetrarch of Galilee,
and Philip
his brother
was tetrarch
of Ituraea
and of the country
of Trachonitis, and
Lysanias was tetrarch
of Abilene,
2 in the high
priesthood of
Annas and Caiaphas,
there came
the word of God
upon John
the
son of Zacharias
in the desert.
3 and
he came to every
region
of the Jordan,
preaching a baptism
of repentance
for the forgiveness
of sins.
4 As
it has been written in
the book of the
words of Isaiah
the prophet:
A voice of
one shouting
in the desert:
Make ready
the road of the Lord;
make his
paths straight.
5 Every ravine
shall be filled
and every mountain
and hill
shall be humbled,
and the crooked things
shall become straight
and the rough roads
shall become smooth.
6 And all flesh
shall see the
salvation of God.

evidently to avoid hiatus.

John 1. 19 And
this is the testimony of John, when the
Jews sent to him priests and
Levites from Jerusalem to ask him: Who are you?
20 And he confessed and did not deny, and confessed:
I am not the Christ.
21 And they asked him: What then? Are you Elijah?
And he says: I am not. Are you the prophet? And he answered: No.
22 So
they said to him: Who are you, that we might
give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?
23 He said: I am a voice
shouting in the desert:
Straighten the road of the Lord,
just as
Isaiah the prophet said.
