Notes and quotes.

§ Thomas 6a:

His disciples asked him and said to him: Do you want us to fast? And in what way shall we pray? Shall we do alms? And from what foods shall we abstain?

Papyrus Oxyrhynchus 654, lines 32-35:

[Εξ]εταζουσιν αυτον οι [μαθηται αυτου και λε]γουσιν· Πως νηστευ[σομεν και πως προσευξομ]εθα και πως [ελεημοσυνην ποιησομεν κα]ι τι παρατηρησομεν περι των βρωματω]ν;

[Ex]amine him the [disciples of his and s]ay: How shall we fa[st and how shall we pra]y and how [shall we do alms an]d what shall we obser[ve about foods?]

Thomas 14abc:

Jesus said to them: If you fast you will beget sin for yourselves, and if you pray they will condemn you, and if you give alms you will be doing evil to your spirits.

Thomas 27:

If you do not fast from the world, you will not fall to the kingdom. If you do not keep the sabbath as a sabbath, you will not look upon the father.

Papyrus Oxyrhynchus 1, lines 4-11:

Says J{esu}s: If you do not fast from the world, you will not find the kingdom of G{o}d. And, if you do not keep the sabbath as a sabbath, you will not see th{e} f{ath}er.

§ Didache 8.1-2a:

But let not your fasts be with the hypocrites. For they fast on the second and fifth days of the week; but you fast on the fourth day and on the preparation.* Nor pray as the hypocrites, but rather as the Lord commanded in his gospel.

* Id est, the sixth day of the week, the day before the sabbath.
