18 But the origin of Jesus
Christ was thus. When his mother Mary
had been betrothed
to Joseph, before they came
together she was found to be with child from the holy spirit.
19 And Joseph, her husband,
being a just man and not wishing to disgrace her, planned to divorce her
in secret.
20 But when he had considered
these things behold, an angel
of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying:
Joseph, son
of David, do not fear to
take Mary as your wife,
for that which has been born in her is from
the holy spirit.
21 But she
will bear a son, and you will call his name Jesus,
for he himself will save his people from their sins.
22 And this all happened
in order to fulfill what was said by the Lord through the prophet,
saying:
23 Behold, the virgin shall
be with child and shall bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel,
which is translated as God with us.
24 And Joseph arose from
sleep and did as the angel of the Lord ordered him, and he took her
as his wife.
25 And he did not know
her until she bore a
son; and she called his name
Jesus.

1 And it happened in those
days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus to enroll all the inhabited
earth in a census.
2 This was the first census
while Quirinius was leader of Syria.
3 And all journeyed to be
enrolled in the census, each to his own city.
4 And
Joseph also ascended from Galilee,
out of the city of Nazareth, to Judea, into the city of David, which is
called Bethlehem, on account that he was from the house and patriarchy
of David,
5 to enroll in the census
with Mary, who was
betrothed to him, and was
pregnant.
6 And it happened that while
they were there the days were fulfilled for her to give birth.
7 And
she bore her firstborn
son; and she wrapped him up and
reclined him in a manger, since there was no place for them in the inn.

{26 But in the sixth month
the angel Gabriel was sent
by God into a city of Galilee whose name was Nazareth,
27 toward a virgin betrothed
to a man whose name was Joseph,
from the house of David,
and the name of the virgin was
Mary.
28 And he came in toward her
and said: Greetings, blessed woman. The Lord is with you.
29 But she was troubled
by this word and was reasoning out what kind of greeting this might be.
30 And the angel said
to her: Do not fear, Mary, for you found
grace with God.
31 And behold, you will
conceive in the womb and will bear a son, and you
will call his name Jesus.
32 This one will be great,
and he will be called the son of the most high, and the Lord God will give
him the throne of his father David,
33 and he will be king over
the house of Jacob unto the ages, and of his kingdom there will be
no end.
34 But Mary said toward
the angel: How is this, since I know no man?
35 And the angel answered
and said to her: The holy spirit
will come upon you, and the power of the most high
will overshadow you, on which account the holy begotten one will be
called the son of God.}
