Elizabeth and Zechariah.

5 There was in the days of Herod king of Judea a certain priest, Zechariah by name, from the division of Abijah, and his wife was from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 They were both just before God, journeying blameless in all the commandments and just requirements of the Lord. 7 And there was no child for them, because Elizabeth was sterile, and they were both well along in their days. 8 But it happened that, while he was serving in the order of his division before God, 9 according to the custom of the service, he was chosen by lot to burn incense after going into the temple of the Lord, 10 and the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of the burning of incense. 11 But an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said toward him: Do not fear, Zechariah, because your request has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son, and you shall his name John. 14 And there shall be joy and gladness for you, and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15 For he will be great before the Lord, and he will not drink wine and liquor, and he will be filled with the holy spirit while still in the womb of his mother, 16 and he will turn many of the sons of Israel unto the Lord their God. 17 And he himself will go forth before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the disobedient to the mindset of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. 18 And Zechariah said toward the angel: By what shall I know this? For I am an elder, and my wife is advanced in her days. 19 And the angel answered and said to him: I am Gabriel, who stands by before God, and I was sent to speak toward you and to evangelize these things to you. 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day in which these things happen, on account that you did not have faith in my words, which will be fulfilled in their season. 21 And the people were expecting Zechariah, and they wondered at his taking time in the temple. 22 But when he went out he could not speak to them, and they knew that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he himself was motioning to them, and he remained mute. 23 And it happened when the days of his priestly service were fulfilled that he went away unto his house. 24 But after these days Elizabeth his wife conceived; and she kept herself hidden for five months, saying: 25 Thus has the Lord done to me in the days in which he looked upon me to remove my disgrace among men.
