22 And, when the days of
their purification were fulfilled according to the law of Moses,
they brought him unto Jerusalem to stand him before the Lord,
23 just as it is written
in the law of the Lord: Every male that opens the womb shall be called
holy to the Lord,
24 and to give a sacrifice
according to what was said in the law of the Lord, a yoke of turtledoves
or two young pigeons.
25 And behold, there was
a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and
devout, waiting for the encouragement of Israel, and the holy spirit
was upon him.
26 And it had been uncovered
for him by the holy spirit that he would not see death until he should
see the Christ of the Lord.
27 And he came in the spirit
into the temple; and, as the parents brought in the child Jesus so as
to do concerning him according to the custom of the law,
28 he himself also received
him into his arms and blessed God and said:
29 Now, master, you are
releasing your servant in peace according to your word,
30 because my eyes saw
your salvation,
31 which you made ready
in the face of all peoples,
32 a light for the
revelation of the gentiles and the glory of your people Israel.
33 And his father and
mother were wondering at the things said concerning him.
34 And Simeon blessed
them and said toward Mary his mother: Behold, this one lies for the
fall and standing up of many in Israel, and for a sign that is
opposed,
35 and a scimitar shall
pierce your soul also, so that the reasonings of many hearts might
be revealed.
36 And there was Anna,
a prophetess, daughter of Phanuel, from the tribe of Asher.
She was advanced in her many days, having lived with her husband
seven years after her maidenhood,
37 and as a widow until
she was eighty-four years old, who never left the temple, serving
night and day with fasts and requests.
38 And at that same hour
she stood by them and confessed God and spoke about him to all those
awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.
